About 70 West

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
—Carl Rogers

At 70 West Counseling, our caring therapists are rooted in their Christian faith. “You may say, but I am not a Christian, or I do not want “Christian Counseling”. Many of our clients have diverse beliefs; additionally, to the extent you want spirituality incorporated into your counseling, we honor and respect the diverse beliefs of all our clients. We commit to creating a safe, non-judgmental environment where healing can flourish, and we strive to meet each person with empathy and understanding, regardless of their background or life circumstances.

We offer a wide range of counseling services, providing support for individuals, couples, families, and children, along with various support groups and mental health education. Our therapists address a multitude of challenges, including trauma, PTSD,  grief, anxiety, depression, and issues related to domestic violence, infidelity, and substance abuse. Our supportive groups, focusing on codependence, grief and loss, and adoptive parent struggles, nurture a space for individuals to connect, share, and heal. We recognize the central role of relationships in the counseling process and aim to walk alongside our clients through their unique journeys with kindness and open-mindedness.

Our dedicated therapists actively provide quality care under the guidance of our executive director and clinical supervisors. We take pride in nurturing the next generation of counselors by offering supervision and support to master-level interns and licensed professional counselor candidates (LPCCs). This commitment empowers them to grow and serve compassionately, ensuring everyone seeking our help receives the care they deserve.

At 70 West, we feel honored to be part of your healing journey and are here to support you every step of the way

Individual, Couples, and Family Therapy

    Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a form of treatment that involves a professional therapist working with individuals to improve their mental health and well-being. Psychotherapy aims to help individuals understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that may be causing distress or interfering with their lives. The therapist may use various techniques, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, or art therapy, to help the client gain insights, develop coping mechanisms, and make positive changes.

    Relationship Therapy

At 70 West Counseling, we utilize family systems theory, which views a couple as an interconnected system, where each partner’s actions and emotions significantly impact the other, and focuses on understanding and modifying the patterns of interaction within the relationship to resolve conflict and improve communication, rather than solely addressing individual issues within the couple.

    Family Therapy

Key points about family systems therapy:
    Focus on relationships:
The primary focus is on how family members relate to each other, including communication patterns, power dynamics, and emotional boundaries.
    Interdependence:
Family systems theory assumes that each family member is influenced by and affects every other member, meaning a problem with one individual can impact the entire family.
    Roles and triangles:
Therapists may explore the roles each family member takes on within the system, as well as “triangles” where two family members might pull a third into their conflict.
    Differentiation of self:
This concept emphasizes the importance of maintaining one’s own identity and emotional boundaries while still being connected to the family.
    Multigenerational perspective:
Family systems therapy often considers how past family dynamics and patterns may be impacting the present family system

    Child Therapy

70 West employs multiple approaches to child therapy, focusing on Play Therapy and Expressive Arts Therapy; both are effective forms of child therapy that can help children express themselves, process emotions, and develop new skills

    Play therapy:
Children use play to learn about themselves, others, and the world. Play therapy can help children:
    Express difficult feelings
    Modify behaviors
    Clarify their self-concept
    Enhance self-esteem
    Build healthy relationships
    Solve problems
    Compensate for difficult feelings

    Expressive arts therapy:
Children use expressive mediums like art, writing, music, and dance to express their thoughts and feelings. Expressive arts therapy can help children:
    Work through feelings
    Heal from trauma
    Learn colors and shapes
Learn cause and effect, choices and consequences, problem solving, and experimenting
Learn how to draw meaning from visuals and communicate through them
    Develop comprehensive thinking capabilities

    Anxiety and Depression

     Anxiety:
We understand that anxiety can feel incredibly overwhelming, as if your mind is caught in a relentless loop of worry and fear about what might happen next. Know that you are not alone in this struggle—many others share similar experiences, and it is completely okay to reach out for help. You don’t have to face it all by yourself.

    Depression:

We understand that depression can feel like an overwhelming weight, making even the simplest tasks seem insurmountable. Please know that you are not weak for feeling this way—your emotions are completely valid. It is important to reach out to someone you trust or a professional who can support you through this difficult time. Remember, there is hope, and you do not have to go through this alone. Sometimes, even the smallest moments of light can help pave the way to brighter days ahead
